leadership team coaching

Leadership team coaching for teams that decide slowly and commit weakly

A leadership team does not fail because its members are weak. It fails because the group has learned a set of habits that make honesty expensive and decisions reversible.

Who this is for. Chief executives and chief operating officers who own a leadership team, and the people leaders supporting them.

Problem

The pattern nearly every stuck team shares

Disagreement happens after the meeting, in twos and threes, in the corridor and on messages. In the room there is polite alignment. Outside it there is a second conversation that carries the real opinions, and that conversation is where commitment quietly dies.

The visible symptoms are consistent. Decisions get made and then reopened. Meetings run long and resolve little. Functions optimize for themselves because the team has never genuinely agreed what it is collectively accountable for.

Approach

What team work involves

It starts with interviews with every member individually, because what people will tell you alone and what they will say in the group are different, and the gap between them is the actual diagnosis.

Then the team works on live decisions rather than exercises. The material is whatever the team is genuinely stuck on. The facilitation makes the unspoken disagreement speakable, and holds the team to the commitments it makes.

Scope

What this includes

01

Individual interviews first

Every member, confidential, before any group session. The pattern across them is what gets fed back, never the attribution.

02

A read back to the team

The diagnosis presented to the group, including the things everyone knows and nobody has said.

03

Working sessions on live decisions

The team practices on what it is actually stuck on. Simulations teach less because the stakes are fake.

04

Decision and commitment protocol

An explicit agreement on how this team decides, who decides what, and what commitment means once the room empties.

05

Follow through checks

Shorter sessions at intervals to test whether the new habits survived contact with a busy quarter.

Fit

Signs this is the right service

  • Decisions are made in the meeting and relitigated in the following days.
  • You can predict which two people will not disagree with each other in public regardless of the topic.
  • Functions are each performing well and the company is not.
  • A new leader has joined the team and the group has not reset around them.
Questions

Questions people ask

How is team coaching different from a leadership offsite?

An offsite is an event. Team coaching is a sequence with a diagnosis at the front and follow through at the back. Offsites often form part of it, but a two day offsite on its own reliably produces a good mood and an unchanged operating pattern.

Do you need the chief executive in the room?

Yes, for team work. The leader's behavior sets what is safe to say more than anything else in the system, and a team session where the leader is absent teaches the team something unhelpful about whether this matters.

What if one member is the problem?

That is common and it is usually only partly true. Interviews establish how much is the individual and how much is a group pattern the individual has been recruited into. Where there is a genuine individual issue it is handled in one to one coaching, not in front of their peers.

How long does this take?

Four to eight months for a meaningful shift, with interviews and a read back in the first six weeks. Teams that want a single session usually want a different thing, which is fine, and we will say so.

Can this run alongside individual coaching?

Often it should. The team work changes the group habits and the individual work handles what a person cannot practice in front of their peers. The boundary on confidentiality between the two is set explicitly at the start.

What if the team has tried this before and it did not last?

Ask what was measured and who followed up. Most team work that fades had no diagnosis at the front and no scheduled return at the back, so the team never had to account for the commitments it made.
